One word unlocks amazing memories of a single second in the past.

I looked at this word today and suddenly I was transported into the past. Not the recent past, but to my childhood. That one word conjured up the smell of paper and wax crayons in the setting of a classroom of a school long demolished. I could hear the voice of the teacher and see his face clearly. The image in the mind of the child that I was came clear. It was a woodland setting and it was being brought to life by that teacher with very few visual aids. I can see the boy sitting across the aisle from me. I do not like him, but I can clearly remember every feature as well as his name and the street where he lived. I can see others just as clearly. There is a faint smoky flavor in the air. Our teacher did indulge in cigarettes, but never in front of us. I can also recall my teacher wasn’t very truthful when he went off at a tangent to recount his life experiences. Hey, everyone wants to be a hero to someone, however small those someones are. The tall tails were fascinating.

How can one single buzz word bring such clarity? I have no idea. All I know is that for a brief moment it in or out of time, I was there, in that moment as it was.

How does this relate to writing? Life memories as well as research fuel a story. However, I am at a loss to know what to do with this one. And no, I am not planning on writing anything remotely to do with time travel. Way too many paradoxes with those babies.

Resolutions for 2014

I am ashamed to have to admit I have five half finished books. This is not good. Must work harder.

1. Finish one book off every month. This is possible.

2. Work on house renos. With daylight increasing I should be able to get stuff finished. Artificial light means I miss bits. Sigh.

3. Work on weight loss. I have lost 14lbs but then I hit a plateau. Nothing gained back, which is good, but I need to be more active. This means using the treadmill. I can do this.

4. Work on a better way to promo my books.

5.Start working on artwork again. Maybe I haven’t got the fine control I once enjoyed, but I can still gain joy out of this hobby.

6. Get my act together and get moving on the quilting projects I have planned. I have the materials, so there is no excuse.

7. Plant seeds for the growing season to come. I can’t do much, as I don’t have the space, but I can get the early starters going. Maybe I will have another Claude, the petunia this year?

8. Get out to do the yardwork very early in the morning before the new neighbors, the ‘mumbles’ are out and about. I really don’t need my creativity mangled by the site of a seventy year old woman in a crop top and low cut shorts. Shudders. I wouldn’t wear anything like that in public view.

9. Get some quality time in with my little grandson. He is such a good baby and he is growing so fast.

Now I am committed.

Fun Artwork Challenge.

There is a lot of indoors happening in the Northern hemisphere this time of year and it is a great moment to take out the art supplies. Just for fun, who would like to try their hand at giving a picture of what some of my characters look like? The main characters in Shadow Over Avalon are Arthur and Ashira. In Darkspire Reaches, they are Raven, Connor and Kryling. Of course, a person could pick any charcter in their normal setting, or freestanding.

This is just for everyone to see how all perceives these characters and won’t, in any way, be used in a book by me. The pictures may be posted here. Just put your name, or designated tag on the body of the picture, and who it represents, so it cannot be pirated. I would love to see what you all think. It can be in any medium, but please, no stock images, which are licensed and need to be paid for.

I will start you off with one I have just finished for a Work In Progress. Image

And here is the first. A picture of Raven, from Darkspire Reaches by Gillian O’Rourke.

Apparently my site is not being cooperative so can pictures please be posted on my Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/C.N.Lesley. Thanks.

New books.

I am working on the sequel to Darkspire Reaches and am 60k in. I am also playing with another work in progress.  Mordred, from Arthurian legends, was always given a very bad rap. What if there were extenuating circumstances? What if he were not a bad guy, but one who was forced into a bad saturation. Now make that bad situation propel an ancient warrior into the modern world he did not understand. I am having fun with this.

My research has come up with some very interesting stuff. The Isles of Scilly were originally one land mass. They sunk due to the melting of the glacier in Scotland causing that to rise and subsequently causing everything south to sink. Google Earth provides some very interesting pictures of the underwater farms and roadways. There is a connection between the Isles to Cornwell. The Vyvyan family in Cornwall has a white horse as its crest that legend has it carried the sole survivor from the deluge. A white horse was kept by the family for many generations. The Seven Stones reef is purportedly the last visible remains of the sunken lands and the site of the city of Lions. Oh yes, I am having fun with this.

The elephant in the room.

Yes I have one and it is huge. I have been trying to sell my lemon condo for three years. Yes, that is right. Three years of HBO fees, etc. I have finally Fed Exed my agreement to sell this lemon to an interested buyer. I am really crossing my fingers that she is so deep in lawyer fees that she won’t wimp out. I have had in excess of five flubs, but none of them have gotten to this level.

It is a very good apartment, right in the center of town, with its own parking, which is a huge plus. I have replaced all the flooring to meet with the demands of the market. I had the place repainted. I had Molly Maid go in there to make it squeaky clean. So why is it a lemon? It is a senior retirement pad. I need to find the right crumply to want to live in it.

I am so hoping this place if off my back and that noting else can go wrong. I would like to be able to get on with my life without fretting about this. Crosses fingers.

Characters.

So what makes a character come alive for me? I have to see the world through their eyes and with their perspective. This is the first step. The second step is immersing myself in their lives. If it is not real to me, then it is not real to my readers, but that is a secondary consideration.

I am not an outliner. I simply can’t stick to that and I have tried. I am a panzer as the story comes to me as it will and through the eyes of the characters. They dictate what will happen next, not me. I just go along with the flow, hoping something reasonable comes out of my musings.

To a certain extent, beta readers also have a huge say in what happens next. I will never, ever, forget the death threats I got as a result of killing off a popular character in the second book of the Shadow series. I found I had to unkill him in an unprecedented hurry. Score? Beta readers one. Me … nil  I fixed the problem tout suite. Takes a moment out to thank all those responsible for the death threats. Yep, you were right. .He really needed to be there.  The second book, Sword of Shadows, is scheduled for publication in 2014 by Kristell Ink, my publishers. There is a third book in the offing.

Homework.

One of the most important things a writer needs to do is read. Sometimes a book can demonstrate what not to do. I have just read one like that and it had a saggy middle. The beginning and end were stellar, but the middle? Not so much. I waded through as I had bought the book, but I was skimming heavily. No, I will not be reviewing this on any site. For one thing, this is not fair to the author. For another, my take is purely my taste as should not reflect on a story.

Nope, this was not a book written by anyone that I know. All the people I know write masterpieces.

In the meantime, Darkspire Reaches is on offer at the Amazons for a very reduced sum. For the price of a fast food meal, a person could have both Darkspire Reaches and Shadow Over Avalon. Now there is a thought as we approach Black Friday.

Why, oh why?

My publishers, Kristell Ink, have generously allowed Darkspire Reaches to now retail at 77pennies uk and 99c US after the free period ended. I have no idea how long this offer will hold. If you want it , then get it now.

My second book, Shadow Over Avalon, is available on all ebook platforms except Kobo, who are still behaving like prissy old women throwing an apron over their collective heads. They are apparently objecting to sex scenes from the books by indy authors. Oh quell horreur. I am so utterly mortified. And yet when I went to find a book on sweet smelling flowers, they suggested ‘The Perfumed Garden’. ROTFLMAO. I note they are still listing the ‘Karma Sutra’ and ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’. Nuff said. Yep, Shadow Over Avalon does contain sex scenes. They are not under the heading of erotic, but they are adult. Go figure.

Shadow Over Avalon.

Genetics is a tricky area to play in. When a person has left no living decedents, it is necessary to reach into their ancestry to recreate them. However, it is also necessary to endow the recreated person with extra gifts. This is when all hell is let loose. Nothing is what it seems and no one can be trusted. The fate of mankind rests on untried shoulders. Let fortune fall where it will.
