Friday the thirteenth

Well, it got off to a wonderful start at 2.30 a.m this morning when the fire alarm started to intermittently squeak.  Not a shrill and continuous alarm, but a squeak followed by another in between two to four minutes. We both got up to check the house and I also felt the walls for hot spots, just in case, although there was no smell of smoke. It stopped for about ten minutes and then restarted and I got up at that point. I can’t sleep through that in the first place and in the second, it this was a real problem, I don’t want the only clothes on my back to be my pjs. Anyhow, looking up the problem on the web indicated that maybe there was a problem with a battery. Now my dh had said they were run off the mains, but it said there was always a battery back up in case of a power outage, which made sense. It also said that if they were low they would start squeaking in the middle of the night when the house was coldest. Again, made a lot of sense as the dh turns down the heating. I turned it up a few notches and there is now silence. Yay!

Too late to be able to sleep, though and I won’t be able to nap later as I am waiting for the delivery of Chalice of Shadows paperbacks. They are coming from Amazon, which unlike Ingram’s, does not consider it needs to pay customs duty so there will be a charge. The delivery person also has a problem actually relinquishing parcels, preferring to creep up to the front door with a ‘You were out’ hanger ready in his hand to whip over the door handle and run back to his van. No knock and no ring of the bell. I have watched him doing it a few times now. If he can manage to do this on three consecutive days, then I will have to go to the airport and pick them up for myself as the customs will still have to be paid. No, I have no idea what motivates anyone to behave like this and can only assume this is how he gets his jollies. Anyhow, no nap for me as I must listen out of the van, whether it comes or not.

Being sleep deprived, I can’t see that I will be writing today. Not with a brain of mush. However, I do have to edit Staff of Shadows, the next in the Shadow series that I finished before xmas. It needs a thorough going over before I turn it in to my publishers. This will take a few days as it comes in at around the 100k mark. Also in the pipeline is the production of Darkspire Reaches as an audio book and I see I have several new chapters that I need to listen to and approve. This latter will be out this year, which is exciting.

Now to tank up on coffee and hope today has finished with its nastiness.

Serpent of the Shangrove

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful world! January 5, 2017
What a wonderful world(s) Ms. Hull has created! I love anything to do with dragons, so I was instantly swept up in the adventure from the gate. I loved Kryling! Such an adorable companion. It was an excellent treatment of the lengths jealousy and hatred can send people. And who hasn’t had a childhood love turned sour? In this case, the two combine to send the hero out into a fast-paced quest for justification. The imagination in creating the worlds is impressive and the layers are complex. I recommend this book for anyone who likes well-constructed high fantasy defined by strong characters.

What can I say? The author has not only met my expectations but exceeded them. Chalice of Shadows expands on this science fiction telling of the Arthurian legend while bringing new depths to the story along with new layers to explore. I am usually jarred or put off by follow-up novels in series that begin with new characters, but Elizabeth introduces these characters in such a way that it feels seamless and natural. And just as I was wondering what can happen if the Nestines are dying out as what seems to be inevitable, Ms. Hull introduced a twist that is both chilling and deadly. Will the Submariners be able to fulfill their mission, even with the new technology revealed, in the face of the new threat? This story is not winding down and promises much adventure and heartache for the future. Emrys still has tricks up his sleeve and appears to be staying a few steps ahead of Shadow, Arthur and company. There is only one negative thing I can say about this book: It ended. Elizabeth! I want more!

Five Star Review for Darkspire Reaches

Woo Hoo! Does happy dance.

Eve reviewed Darkspire Reaches

Not your Typical Fantasy Novel January 3, 2017

I am a large fantasy reader, and that mostly is recent. But this goes beyond the standard dragon fantasy outline and is really about a young woman’s journey of self-discovery, and rising above the hardships of the hand dealt to her in life. I loved this book. The character development is what jumped out at me the most; I almost always love a book where I can connect to the characters, and this book did not disappoint on that front. This was a grab you from word one to the finish. I can’t wait to get a chance to read more from this gifted author. The plot was very well paced, my mind tends to stray from what I am doing if my attention is not grabbed and kept, and this book managed to keep me reading from page one to the very last page. Again the growth of the main character Raven is amazing and what really gives this novel the five-star rating I have rated it. To end this review, I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading more from this author.

Color Dragon

My year in review.

Looking back, it has been a very busy year. On the writing front, I have two new books published. The first, in spring, was Serpent of the Shangrove, book two in the Darkspires series and yes, I am planning a book three.Serpent-of-the-Shangrove-Digital-Cover-1-641x1024

What is this one about? Here is the trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMwPuG0FEys

The second book came out just before Christmas and is the third book in the Shadow series, entitled Chalice of the Shadows. Yes, there is a fourth book in the series and I have just finished writing it, so now need to do some editing. That one will be called Staff of the Shadows.

chalice-of-the-shadows-hi-res-large

Here is the trailer for Chalice. I haven’t made one for the Staff as of yet.

On a personal level we welcomed our first granddaughter, who is a joy after three dear little boys. It is amazing to watch them all develop into tiny people as time passes.

Looking forward to next year, I have a story in a dragon anthology coming out at Easter and I have a Paranormal Fantasy, entitled ‘Shift’ that has been with the Publishers since the earlier part of this year so I hope that will come out, too, along with Staff of Shadows. I guess the latter is dependent on if there is room in the schedule.

What I plan to get finished next year are a Science Fiction book, entitled ‘Death Angel’ and an Urban Fantasy, entitled for the moment as ‘Wildenwold’ although I think that is going to alter. I also have a story to finish for another anthology prospect and that must be done very soon if it is to stand a chance.

It is nice to be able to look forward to the New Year and be fairly confident there isn’t going to be a third world war started by cranky people, who are fortunately no longer going to have any influence. Hopefully, people will lighten up and start being nice to each other again.

Great new five star review for Shadow Over Avalon

SOA PostcardDoes happy dance!

5.0 out of 5 starsEnticing & captivating

Format: Kindle Edition

I’ve always been drawn to Arthurian legend, loving to read about a world inhabited by knights and dragons. This story was no exception – beautifully written, with rich descriptive content and a web of intricately-woven sub-plots. The characters fit perfectly, they are as real as are we – they draw you into their world, make you feel. The two lands, one set under water and the other above the surface are poles apart, which makes for a fascinating read.

Thankfully, fiction enables writers to take the past, reinvent it and create refreshing stories to entertain us. This is pure entertainment. It’s a long book, but well worth the time.

I listened to the first few chapters of this story using Kindle’s text to speech facility – OK, so the pronunciation of names like Ashira was a bit dodgy, but the tinniness actually made the futuristic elements more futuristic – if you get my drift. An audiobook would be a fabulous addition to, as this is a book befitting a regular storyhour.
