Darkspire Reaches free on all ebook platforms!

Digital CoverThis is a rare Bookbub promoted book. They are picky and they picked mine. Today their promo went out and my publisher and I watched in awed amazement. At one point 17 books per minute were being downloaded from Amazon.com. I don’t have the figures for the other sites as we were too mesmerized by what was happening on this site. Over ten thousand people using Amazon.com are sitting down to read my book tonight. I am both humbled and very grateful.

This book reached #18 on the free bestsellers list. I would love it to stay there. Download your copy today and make my millennium.

Research – How important is it?

For me, it is vital. Maybe 50% of my research doesn’t end up in my books, but the bones are there. World building doesn’t just pop out of nowhere. A world must have rules and set circumstances related to reality. I count an inadvertent mentor as Frank Herbert with his Dune series. He based the planet Dune on a Middle Eastern desert style of life and he immersed himself in it, adding to it as he went along. Armed with this example of excellence, I tried to incorporate the essential details of a world in my books.

In Darkspire Reaches, this meant demonstrating the difference in the races by more than the physical. There had to be speech patterns and attitudes. Reasons for disagreements needed to happen for the world to come alive. Note, this book is currently free on all ebook platforms for a limited time.

Shadow over Avalon posed different problems as there wasn’t just a difference in race to content with, there was a difference in species. Each of them has their own, very real goals. Each goal defines the species and its ability to survive. Aside from that, I used known landmarks for a lot of the settings and that meant reams of research and photos. It is not just a matter of blithely eliminating all roads, houses, infrastructure, etc. Removing things means other things must be set up to replace these. Then there are other considerations, such as religion, currency, social status, and technology, or the lack thereof. Added into this mix went cutting edge scientific discoveries, and yes, this meant reading published papers on the subjects of embryology, genetics. and physics.

A huge amount or research went into going back into ancient Welsh history to get the true account of King Arthur. Mallory’s account was taken from Gregory of Monmouth, a misogamist monk with a real hatred of women. Hence the incest story, which was total fabrication to discredit women of power. He effectively rewrote history to revile priestesses of the old religion in a way that would provoke an eew factor from the then modern man. What a monk was doing having those sort of thoughts beggars the question. However, it meant I could write a ‘clean’ Arthur, set in a future world with a clear conscience, and discard any erroneous ickiness. I have always thought Arthur was a greater man than portrayed and now I had my vindication based on extensive research. But this is not a historical recreation. It is what happens next, based on the platform of what should have been the true rendition. In twelve days you can see for yourselves. In the meantime, there are pictures on my Pinterest account of my world. Enjoy.

Pinterest pictures showing Shadow Over Avalon settings and other stuff.

Shadow Over AvalonWith the release of Shadow Over Avalon coming up in just twelve days, I though I would share some pictures of the settings used in this book and also some of the more fantastical elements. Dinosaurs? In an Arthurian book? Oh yes and there is a good and valid reason for this. Pictures of Earthrise from the moon? Yep, it comes into play. Rare Blue John stones? They are needed. Merlin? You will have to see for yourself.  This is a science fantasy story fittingly being released on Halloween. Prepare to go to the next level of scared and thrilled. This is something entirely different. http://www.pinterest.com/cnlesley/shadow-over-avalon/

How to start twitching in one.

I admit I am a hopeless tweaker. I write something and then I tweak it, let it sit and tweak it again … and again … and again. I am at the stage of editing with my second book that I must take my mitts out of the cookie jar and leave it alone. I cannot touch this book any more unless asked to fix something. And now I am twitching.

I have a wonderful editor, who I trust implicitly and who has come up with some stunning suggestions I hope I have implemented to the full. Now comes the tough part. I cannot go back in and tweak those places unless I am asked. Twitch, twitch.

I know I must let go of my baby for release into the big world. It is very similar to seeing children leave home for the first time. They are all grown up and need to begin the next phase of their life as independent adults. Part of this is huge pride in the child’s progress and the other part is the wailing for the lost baby. So I twitch and fidget and cross my fingers that the tweaks I have put in are ok.

Yes, I will be a good person and not bug others doing their jobs. I know I am going to be very pleased with the finished result. The care and depth of understanding that has gone into this book via my wonderful editor, Zoe Harris, at Kristall Ink leaves me in no doubts on this score. I know my precious baby is in very good hands and yet the urge to still tweak is stunning. So I wait to see if there is anything else required and I twitch, although I know in my heart that this book is going to be a million times better.

I will be fine once Shadow Over Avalon has gone out of the door and that is the end of it for me as far as writing goes. At that point, this is a done deal and there is no possibility of tweaking.  Thirteen days to release. Twitch, twitch.

Mmm, my food choices seem to be right.

Hollywood stars, or would be stars are now embracing the Atkins diet. This is welcome news to me as I am on modified Atkins regime. Gone are all processed foods. No bread, pasta, rice, or cereal. No tinned stuff. No milk, which is substituted by coconut Silk. I am losing weight and various health problems have disappeared.

I came across this little gem tonight. Makes a person think, aye? http://eatlocalgrown.com/article/12214-8-foods-even-the-experts-won-t-eat.html

I would point out that Canadian cattle are grass fed, not grain fed. The difference in flavor is very easy to discern, if we are foolish enough to shop at Walmart for meat products. (All their stuff comes from the States.)

In other news, the countdown for the release of Shadow Over Avalon is ongoing. Only fifteen more days before it goes live. I am so excited. Now, do you want a freebie? My publishers, Kristell Ink, have released Darkpire reaches for a very limited time as a free ebook on all platforms. This offer may not be repeated. Go get your copy now.

Thanksgiving.

I have so much to be thankful for this year. Most of my family visited for lunch and it was so wonderful to have the them all over. Baby George was the highlight and he was an absolute angel.

I didn’t get done everything I wanted to do before they came. I had hoped to have my new drapes hanging, but found I had misplaced the hooks to get them on the rods. Ah, on the subject of rods. It is a well-known fact that most men will definitely get something done eventually. I have only been waiting nine years for the rods to go up to finish the drapes as I must have the drop measurement before the tops can go on. So very, very close to success. Now if I can only remember what I did with the hooks in those nine years?

Still, the renos are going along at a steady pace. We got rid of a manky old couch in the fall clean up and also a side table that was supposed to be an antique. Mmms, didn’t veneer stuff like that in the old days and I have always had my doubts. Water damage gave the truth and out it went. Now I have a coffee table and two matching side tables and a new couch matching the new ones in the family room, (downstairs ones courtesy of a Brick snarl up on previous product). It is getting there. The painting of walls is progressing slowly because the sitting room has high ceilings and I am still not100% after my neck injury. I have to do a little at a time, but am just aching to get started on the family room, which will go a lot quicker as the ceilings are normal. Yay!

In other news, Darkspire Reaches is now free on all the Amazons and will be for a limited time around and about the release of Shadow Over Avalon on Halloween. Don’t miss out on this offer. It may not be repeated.

Indecisions.

I am being seduced by the neat apps on mac. However, I am not in the market for a new machine anytime soon, having just acquired a new pc laptop. I would not switch over my desktop, as I have programs on there that I know are not compatible, but when a new laptop is needed, …. mmms, maybe. Only if the keyboard is a standard size though. This bears thinking about.

I am so lucky that my dear husband works in cutting edge research for a university. I get a heads up well in advance and will incorporate various delicious munchies in the next book, once this paper is published  and free for all.

It is so amazing to me that science fiction so closely parallels what is happening right now. Going back in history, there is Jules Vern and Aldous Huxley, to name a couple. What comes first? The science, or the sci fi? Don’t know, but it is fascinating.

TA DAH! Important Announcement.

My publishers, Kristell Ink, in celebration of the upcoming publication of Shadow Over Avalon on Halloween,  have just released Darkspire Reaches as FREE on Smashwords. Over the next few days this will filter down to Barns and Noble, Nook and finally to Amazon. Can I please ask everyone to let Amazon know when the price on Barns and Noble becomes free? Amazon will then do a price match and it will be for all the Amazons.

I am really excited over how SOA is shaping up with the help of my amazing editor, Zoe Harris. This is a totally positive experience. Does happy dance. As per usual, there will be a few chapters of SOA released for free reading on Amazon when it goes live. In the meantime, I have the prologue and a few snippets up here, on my webpage. These are all previous to editing, although the changes will be minimal.

Come take a peek at my worlds.
