Why research for Fantasy or Sci fi?

Suspension of disbelief for the reader is contingent on getting the facts right. It doesn’t matter that this may be a fantasy, or a sci fi world. Things have to stack up on the believability level. If I give you a green cat, then I have to feasibly justify why the cat is green. Not that I have, but this is an example.

Setting is everything. If one component is out of place, then the whole thing falls down like a pack of cards. This is where research comes into play. Every single aspect of that which is relevant must be correct. Grounding the fantastical, or the  speculative, needs a solid platform of known facts that are correct and that can be correlated as correct.

Does it matter to a reader if they see the word ‘league’? Yep, It is an archaic definition. No, it is not essential to point out that a league is three miles. It is essential to get those leagues into an actual frame of reference that is legitimate. If I find a position A is thirty miles from position B and I want to use the word leagues, then I know it must be ten. Maybe a reader will care and look it up, or maybe they won’t. Doesn’t matter, because I will know. I have to get it right.

Arthur has always been a loner, set apart by his exceptional telepathy skills. He doesn’t want the life of a Seer in the undersea city of Avalon. He wants to use his skills to fight the overlords on the surface world, who are subjugating humanity,  but to do that he must register as normal. What is normal for a man without a clue who his parents were, or maybe are? Why are his birth records sealed?

Curious about the lives of the slave people on the surface, he begins the study of one who escaped. Once highly placed, Shadow has become a mercenary serving Avalon to fight the beast overlords. The deeper he gets into her life, the more he attracts the attention he doesn’t want. What was once a fun diversion from his Seer studies now takes on deadly overtones. Someone is lying. It could cost him more than his life.

As promised, a tiny snippet.

This is from Shadow Over Avalon and you will not get this from the Amazon extract.

Ector flinched. “Why is this girl the only one we found with any idea of Nestines? Why didn’t she react to us with the usual Terran panic? We may have picked up an unexpected advantage, Tarvi. One I’d be a fool to overlook.”

“Nestine ship to the West,” Suki called, from the edge of the lake. “They seem to think there’s something out there worth landing for,” Ector said, watching the bright disc descending. “Cut that animal free from reins, and then it’s time to leave.”

Ector scooped up the Terran, throwing her over his shoulder. With his unit behind, he headed out into the lake depths.

The copper horse whuffled night air, puzzled at the sudden quiet. It pricked up its ears, heading home when pink glints of dawn light rose over the horizon. Midnight-colored eyes faded back into rock as the lonely bark of a dog-fox cut through sleepy silence while ripples calmed on dark water.

One word unlocks amazing memories of a single second in the past.

I looked at this word today and suddenly I was transported into the past. Not the recent past, but to my childhood. That one word conjured up the smell of paper and wax crayons in the setting of a classroom of a school long demolished. I could hear the voice of the teacher and see his face clearly. The image in the mind of the child that I was came clear. It was a woodland setting and it was being brought to life by that teacher with very few visual aids. I can see the boy sitting across the aisle from me. I do not like him, but I can clearly remember every feature as well as his name and the street where he lived. I can see others just as clearly. There is a faint smoky flavor in the air. Our teacher did indulge in cigarettes, but never in front of us. I can also recall my teacher wasn’t very truthful when he went off at a tangent to recount his life experiences. Hey, everyone wants to be a hero to someone, however small those someones are. The tall tails were fascinating.

How can one single buzz word bring such clarity? I have no idea. All I know is that for a brief moment it in or out of time, I was there, in that moment as it was.

How does this relate to writing? Life memories as well as research fuel a story. However, I am at a loss to know what to do with this one. And no, I am not planning on writing anything remotely to do with time travel. Way too many paradoxes with those babies.
